The Art and Business of Singing, a workshop on striving for excellence in worship.
On July 20, 2024, the Rhenish Church South Africa, Elsies River Congregation, kicked off a new chapter themed “Striving for Worship Excellence” with a workshop titled “The Art and Business of Singing.” Led by the talented Heinrich Frans, this event was the first step in reinventing and revitalizing our worship team.

What We Covered
The workshop aimed to elevate our worship team’s performance by exploring:
- Vocal Anatomy: Understanding how our voices work.
- Interpretation: Expressing emotion through song.
- Improvisation: Adding creativity to performances.
- Style Approach: Adapting to different musical styles.
- Routine: Developing effective vocal practices.
Heinrich Frans, a professional with a rich background in singing, led the session. Starting his career at age 11 with the St. George’s Cathedral Choir, Heinrich has performed with top artists and has a broad experience in music. He also works as a recording engineer and vocal coach.
Key Takeaways
The workshop began with a troubleshooting session where we tackled our team’s main challenges together. We also received helpful reading materials about vocal anatomy, emphasizing that excellence requires both dedication and hard work.
Participants appreciated the workshop, with one noting, “It made me feel heard and gave me a better understanding of my limitations.”
Looking Ahead
This workshop was more than just a learning experience; it marked the start of a new era of striving for worship excellence. With Heinrich Frans’s guidance and our team’s enthusiasm, we’re ready to tackle challenges and continue improving our worship practices.
